Fall Internship Opportunities at Pfizer

Position: Co-op Student Position - Oral Products Center of Emphasis, Pfizer Inc., Groton, CT, USA.

Dates: September - December 2007 (typically 4 months duration)

Pfizer Inc. is a leading global pharmaceutical company with a strong research-base, focused on the development of human and animal medicines. Exciting co-op student opportunities exist in the Oral Products Center of Emphasis, which includes Solids Formulation Development, Materials Science, Discovery Support and Pharmaceutical Technology Development, based in Groton, Connecticut, USA.

The student will be responsible for progressing an independent research project, directed by an experienced senior scientist. The research project will include primarily laboratory experiments and in some cases computer modeling, and will focus on providing real-life experience of the drug development process at Pfizer. The candidates will undertake laboratory experiments involving tasks such as pre-formulation physical chemistry, the preparation and packaging of pharmaceutical dosage forms, and the characterization of raw materials, in-process samples, and final drug products. A strong emphasis will be placed on using fundamental scientific principles to understand and design better drug delivery systems for in-vitro and in-vivo use. A written report of the research results is typically required, and co-ops usually have the opportunity to present the results of their research to the members of the Pfizer research community at the end of their work term.

Candidates should be enrolled as full-time students for the whole of 2007-2008, preferably in Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or Chemistry programs. General laboratory skills (e.g., preparation of solutions, pH measurements) and a basic understanding of analytical methods is required. A strong background in physical chemistry and knowledge of drug product manufacturing procedures are desired. Remuneration will be dependent upon candidate experience (starting at ~$700 / week) and relocation expenses will be provided (up to ~$1000).
